Milliner: Crafting the Perfect Headpiece for Disney Characters

As the milliner costume production coordinator, Orlando brings characters to life by crafting the intricate headpieces worn in Disney's stage performances, parades and shows. One of the most unique aspects of Orlando's job is the level of creativity and detail that goes into each headpiece. "Every day, I guide my team in bringing designers' visions to life," says Orlando, who leads a team responsible for designing and constructing headwear for Disney performers.

Orlando's journey at Disney began in costume production, developing garments before transitioning to the millinery team. "It's such a magical feeling seeing the pieces we've created on stage or in the parks," he shares, highlighting the rewarding experience of seeing his work in action. One standout moment in his career was helping create headpieces for Disney On Ice presents Let's Dance! and the Country Bear Musical Jamboree, where his work brought fresh life to iconic characters.

Orlando's advice for aspiring milliners? "Have advanced sewing skills and attention to detail. The level of craftsmanship required in this role is immense, but it's incredibly fulfilling to see it all come together."

Steam Train Mechanic: Preserving Walt's Legacy on the Rails

For Justin, working as a steam train mechanic at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom is more than just a job—it's an opportunity to keep Walt Disney's love of trains alive. "I start my day at 5:30 a.m., ensuring the steam trains are up to pressure for the park's daily operations," Justin explains. His role involves conducting inspections, addressing technical issues and working on ongoing projects, all while being on call to maintain the beloved Disney steam trains.

Justin's career journey began in the automotive world, inspired by his father, who was also a mechanic. After working as a bus mechanic for the City of Orlando, he transitioned to Disney in 2013. "I started with Disney as a bus mechanic and moved to steam train maintenance in 2018," he reflects.

For Justin, the most rewarding part of his role is working on real, functioning steam trains, a rare opportunity today. "Being able to continue Walt's legacy with his love for trains is an honor and privilege," Justin says. He encourages anyone with an interest in the mechanical trades to explore the opportunities Disney has to offer: "I've been able to make a career out of it, and you can, too."
