Life as a Military Spouse at The Walt Disney Company
The Walt Disney Company has a long history of supporting the United States Armed Forces. Disney’s dedication to military service members and veterans goes back more than a century. From the ambitions of a patriotic young Walt Disney to the establishment of life-changing programs and institutions, Disney’s steadfast support of veterans and the military community continues to evolve and have a meaningful impact on those who have bravely served our country.
But did you know The Walt Disney Company supports not only U.S. military veterans but their families too?
Meet Donita!
Donita is a Senior Manager in Human Resources and the spouse of a U.S. Army veteran, Dave. She has a large connection with the military through familial pride. Many family members, including two aunts with 20 years of service, served along with her husband. “It comes with many sacrifices, of course, but I am still so proud to say that this is a part of my family’s story,” she said.
Now, her family is able to support fellow military families within Disney.
As a Senior Manager, Donita works with clients around the globe to help guide employees through big and small challenges. “I pride myself on being a trusted and strategic partner, helping leaders and teams reach their goals while making sure people feel recognized and supported,” she shared.
She started her Disney journey three years ago, “I wanted to experience a fast-paced organization and knew that Disney would be the right place for me. I am a huge Marvel fan, love princesses and was blown away by what I saw regarding benefits and career opportunities,” she shared.
Through working in the Human Resources ecosystem, Donita learned of the numerous employee resource groups that Disney supports. Most notably being SALUTE, which supports veterans and military families. “I joined SALUTE and am a strong supporter of the Military Fellowship program. I feel both programs are my way to feel connected to the military community and give back in ways that others have given to my family. The relationships I have built through employees who served have helped my family navigate purchasing a home using Veterans’ Affairs, ensuring we were fully utilizing all of our military benefits and connected my husband with other resources as an Army veteran. Coming from a military family, I have seen the sacrifices they have made and how beneficial this community is to have through it all so I knew it was necessary to be active and involved as much as I could.”
The Walt Disney Company has been a source of joy for Donita’s family. They have created many magical memories on the West Coast at Disney. One of her favorite memories is taking her entire family to Disneyland Resort to celebrate her daughter’s first birthday.
Today, Heroes Work Here, a company-wide initiative helps hire, train and support the military community at The Walt Disney Company. From the Veterans Institute, SALUTE and the Disney Military Fellowship Program, Heroes Work Here creates opportunities for veterans and their families.
