1. Apply for Roles That Inspire Your Next Career Chapter
“If you’re unsure which jobs you should apply to, the biggest advice I can offer is to apply for roles that match your experience as well as your career objectives. It’s important that you meet the required qualifications, as recruiters will only be able to consider candidates who possess the minimum requirements.
Even if you qualify for several different roles, I encourage candidates to focus on the roles that align with the path you’re on or the path you want to be on. Applying without purpose or intention is similar to driving without knowing the directions or your destination.
The saying ‘quality over quantity’ is fitting when it comes to submitting applications.
You’re the one steering your career, so even if you have to take a detour, you’re still headed in the right direction because you know where you want to be!”
2. Tailor Your Resume
“Your resume should clearly answer one question: ‘Why are you a strong fit for this specific role?’ A strong resume is your first opportunity to tell your story!
Start with a master resume but always tailor it to align with the specific job description for the role you are applying for. Highlight the skills and experiences most relevant to the role and reflect keywords and competencies from the job description to ensure alignment.
Keep your resume focused and concise, aiming for one to two pages. Prioritize impact over volume by including your most relevant and recent experiences. Include clear, results-driven statements that demonstrate metrics, achievements, business impacts and other positive outcomes.
Organize your resume using consistent formatting, error-free grammar and a clean and professional layout.”
3. Technology and Your Application
“As a recruiter, I have the incredible privilege of helping careers and dreams come together. The most rewarding part of my role is serving as a connector, aligning talented individuals with opportunities that not only meet our business needs, but also that inspire and excite them.
Technology, including artificial intelligence, can be a helpful tool as you prepare, whether for brainstorming, practicing or refining your materials. However, what truly sets you apart is your authentic voice and unique story.
Don’t lose sight of the human element! Your individuality, perspective and passion are what make you memorable. Let those shine through every step of the process.”
4. Dealing with Rejection
“Rejection is part of the process–and it will happen.
While long-term career goals are important, timing matters. My goal is always to match the right role with the right person at the right time. When timing doesn’t align, that’s okay!
Regardless of the outcome, I want every candidate to walk away feeling that their time was valued and that the experience was positive and meaningful.
Take any feedback you receive, learn from the experience and keep applying. If a role aligns more with a future goal but not your current qualifications, it may be better to focus on opportunities that fit your experience today and help you continue building toward your career aspirations.
The right opportunity may be just one step away!”
