Investing in the Next Generation at The Walt Disney Company Japan

The Walt Disney Company Japan values the “Next Generation” and offers resources, such as a Business Employee Resource Group, to encourage growth.

Meet three Next Generation professionals from Japan who have experienced career development through exciting and challenging projects, supportive leadership and other opportunities.

1. Hidemi, Assistant Manager, Web/Social Media

Hidemi2

Hidemi manages Disney+ social media platforms, promoting new releases, recommending content and creating buzz around key shows. As a young professional in the marketing industry, she keeps up with the latest trends daily through her own social media. By researching specific topics and ideas, she saves inspiring examples and considers how she can apply them to her own work.

The most important skill Hidemi has gained in her role is empathy. “If you can’t empathize with the audience, you won’t gain their interest,” she explained. “If the content is authentic, long-term value can be created.”

At Disney, resources are provided to inspire and encourage growth for employees and cast members. During a marketing presentation for FX’s “Shōgun,” Hidemi was impressed by the passion and quality of the materials and assets produced by the FX team. Their dedication motivated the Japanese marketing team, leading to a scaled-up promotional campaign in Japan.

2. Daiichiro, Manager, Brand Commercialization

Daiichiro2

As a manager on the brand commercialization and consumer products team, Daiichiro develops Disney fashion items for mass markets. Before joining Disney, he excelled in focusing on and building trust with one client. After joining Disney, his role involved managing multiple clients in addition to branding and sales. His manager created an environment of communication that allowed him to thrive by improving areas and leveraging strengths. This encouragement accelerated his growth.

One of Daiichiro’s proudest accomplishments was securing a new category of high-end jewelry, which aimed to target an underrepresented group in the fashion segment. By carefully analyzing his partner’s business model, Daiichiro helped increase that partner’s sales by more than five times compared to the previous year.

“At Disney, there are opportunities to challenge yourself, regardless of age or experience!” Daiichiro offered as advice to those looking to start their career in licensing. “Take a proactive approach, always prioritize ‘guest first’ and focus on sharpening what you are uniquely capable of.”

Saori first became a Disney fan after being introduced to the video game called “Kingdom Hearts.” From then, it was her dream to create Disney products. Today, she leads Disney Store’s product development team, handles product planning and manages development schedules.

In her role, Saori has been given the opportunity to take on new challenges. At the start of her Disney career, she was supported in trying new things, such as creating products and collaborating with different brands. As a manager, she can improve productivity, such as scheduling and meetings, and she appreciates the flexibility and positive environment that allows for change.

“I’m proud of taking on responsibilities beyond a single product category,” Saori shared, “and leading initiatives that brought products from concept to launch across multiple categories.”
