A Non-Traditional Career Path to Pinewood Studios

The opportunities for your next chapter are endless here at The Walt Disney Company! Moving from one industry to another can be a big change, but Craig, a Senior Security Manager with Lucasfilm is proof that career paths are not always linear.

In Craig’s role as a Senior Security Manager at Lucasfilm based out of Pinewood Studios, he oversees security for all Lucasfilm feature films and TV shows. In addition to this, he’s also responsible for Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), LucasArts, Lucasfilm Animation and Skywalker Sound. His team is responsible for planning and managing all security associated activities. They deliver a proactive and efficient approach globally to intellectual property safeguarding, risk reduction, incident response, internal investigations, cast security and event security planning.

He explained his role further, saying, “My team collaborates with each production in the design, development and implementation of physical and logistical security production initiatives. This includes oversight of security coordinators assigned to each production within a geographic region. We also conduct security risk assessments, providing event security support and liaison with local law enforcement, most recently at the Star Wars Celebration held in London, as well as providing security training and advice for all production cast and crew.”

However, Craig hasn’t always worked in the film industry! He started his career at 16 by joining the British Army. After undergoing rigorous training, he was selected for the Royal Military Police, where he excelled and was chosen for the Close Protection Unit, a unit that is designated for protecting senior military and government officials when deployed overseas. After 11 years of service, he then went onto work alongside the Foreign and Commonwealth Office at the British Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq.

From there, he transitioned from the military to media after being approached by Disney to spearhead production security on individual productions, such as “Aladdin,” “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” and “Cruella.” His success on these projects led him to his current role within Lucasfilm.

“My decision to join the film and television industry and continue focusing on security was driven by a unique blend of passion and expertise. Having honed my skills in high-stakes military and diplomatic environments, I became acutely aware of the critical importance of security in all sectors, including the seemingly glamorous world of entertainment,” Craig told us.

“The dynamic, unpredictable nature of film and television production presents a myriad of security challenges that are both complex and intriguing. This industry allows me to apply my strategic thinking and problem-solving skills in new, creative contexts, contributing to the successful execution of projects by creating a secure environment where artists and technicians can focus on their craft without concerns for their safety. Moreover, the ever-evolving nature of security threats in this digital age continues to challenge and inspire me, ensuring that my career remains both fulfilling and impactful.”

Transitioning into the film and television industry requires a combination of passion, resilience, and a willingness to start from the ground up. Craig’s advice to anyone considering this path is to immerse yourself in the industry through research and networking. He added, “Our Productions offer Trainee Positions that provide on-the-job learning and a chance to prove your skills. Networking is crucial! The connections made can lead to job opportunities and valuable mentorships. Be prepared for a highly competitive environment and maintain flexibility. Lastly, never underestimate the power of persistence and continued learning. Stay updated with industry trends and technology, and always be ready to seize the opportunity when it arises.”
