Unlocking career dreams with Disney Cruise Line: Jarrett’s journey as a Third Officer Postgraduate
What did you dream about when you were young? Growing up, Third Officer Jarrett dreamed about navigating cruise ships. They were inspired to pursue a career in the maritime industry during their family vacations aboard our Disney Cruise Line ships. “I have vivid memories of being in the Oceaneer’s Lab playing the ship driving simulator for hours and driving the Disney ship model that was available,” they said.
After graduation, Jarrett landed their dream position as a Third Officer within Disney Cruise Line’s Postgraduate program. This early career opportunity is designed for cadets who have recently graduated from U.S.-based maritime schools, allowing them to gain hands-on experience aboard Disney Cruise Line vessels. Throughout the program, participants have the chance to sail and acquire valuable real-world skills. Upon completing the program, Jarrett completed their COLREGs assessment and was invited to join the rotation as a Third Officer.
In their role, Jarrett is responsible for watchkeeping on the ship’s bridge and overseeing the maintenance of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) equipment. With safety at the forefront, a typical day also includes checking specific areas of the ship to ensure all is functioning properly according to standards. “I also inspect segments of our main water line used for our fire hoses, ensuring they are in good working order, along with updating all of our SOLAS training manuals used by crew when they want to know more about the safety equipment we have onboard,” they said.
As part of the marine and technical operations team, Jarrett is a key player that provides safety throughout sailings around the world so that everyone onboard can experience the magic—both guests and crew members. “While my position is mostly behind the scenes, I’m creating magic at sea by keeping the ship safe through navigation and maintenance of the vessel.”
As they continue to navigate their career as a Third Officer, an exciting fleet expansion is occurring from now until 2031, taking Jarrett’s journey beyond the horizon. “There are so many opportunities to develop in my current position and to grow in my career to higher positions. I think others should be excited because with so many new vessels joining the fleet, sei so many current and new positions that need to be filled.”
Following Jarrett’s footsteps, right now is the best time to kick-start a career with Disney Cruise Line. They have one piece of advice for those considering joining the marine and technical operations team: “When you first get onboard, you’re not expected to know everything, and we know you won’t learn everything right away but don’t be afraid to ask questions. That was a big part of the magic for myself was how understanding and helpful everyone onboard was to helping me be successful for when I eventually took over a Third Officer role.”
