Make It Blue: How Walt Disney World Sewing Specialists Bring Costumes to Life
Once upon a time, Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother enchanted her a beautiful blue gown to wear to Prince Charming’s royal ball. In another story, Sleeping Beauty’s three Good Fairies used their magic to sew the perfect dress for her 16th birthday.
At the Walt Disney World Resort, Sewing Specialists use their talents to produce entertainment and operationalcostumes worthy of the highest fairy praise.
Whether that means ensuring that Daisy Duck’s bow is perfectly purple or that Mickey’s magician cape in Town Square Theater is in tip-top shape, Sewing Specialists can create, alter and repair a wide range of costumes.
Mending the Magic
For some Sewing Specialists, a typical day can include constructing detailed intricate garments from start to finish, sewing on a variety of fabrics, performing alterations, collaborating with the patternmaker on replenishment orders and more.
New projects are always coming along and keep every day exciting, according to Sewing Specialist Kylee.
“I’m always working on something new and interesting while expanding on my skills,” Kylee said.
Clothing has been a longtime passion for Kylee that she hoped to pursue further at Walt Disney World.
“I’ve always loved to sew and make things,” Kylee said. “I went to school for costume design with the dream of someday designing for a Disney character.”
Rewards of the Role
This is a unique role — every piece created or altered is worn out in the parks and viewed by guests. Whether it’s in a parade, show, character greeting or other setting, Sewing Specialists’ craftsmanship can be found all around Walt Disney World.
“Seeing Mickey Mouse wear a jacket I made or Daisy Duck dance in a dress I got to sew is so special and rewarding,” Kylee said.
While the Fairy Godmother was easily able to enchant Cinderella’s dress with a wave of her wand, previous sewing experience is essential to being successful in the Sewing Specialist role. Skills can improve every day, but a strong foundation will help.
For Kylee, what sets Walt Disney World apart from other employers is the opportunities to grow within the company.
“I started in housekeeping, worked in the parks, and now I’m here,” Kylee said. “There’s so much farther I can go with my career and the dreams I have.”
