What This Communications Major Learned While Working in Food and Beverage

When applying for the Disney College Program, Nicholas DiCosmo was excited about the opportunity to make magic, and was hopeful for a role in attractions, transportation or resort concierge. As a people person who loves talking with Guests, he felt these roles would best support his vision for his Disney Program. When Nicholas received his role placement and realized he would be working in food and beverage, he knew this wasn’t his ideal role – but he also reminded himself that Walt had a vision, and regardless of his role, he would now be able to play a part in that dream.

Nicholas’ main goal when he started his Disney Program was to get his foot in the door at Disney professionally. As a Communications major at Kean University, he hoped that his role in food and beverage could teach him transferrable skills that he could use in his future career in the Communications field.

“The skills I’ve learned in food and beverage that will transfer to other roles in the future are patience, understanding, listening, friendliness when interacting with Guests and respect,” shared Nicholas.

Although he had different expectations, Nicholas has definitely made the most of his time at Connections Eatery in EPCOT.

Nicholas grew up visiting Walt Disney World Resort and has always had outstanding interactions with Cast Members throughout his visits. These connections sparked a desire to be a part of that magic for other Guests, also igniting his love for communications and storytelling.

“My interactions with Cast Members over the years, always being so friendly and nice to talk to, gave me the realization I should start my program because I wanted to bring the magic they gave to me, to others as well,” said Nicholas.

Within his role, Nicholas has created so many lasting memories and has had countless interactions with Guests that remind him why he applied for a Disney College Program.

“I was working behind the counter giving out trays and I noticed a family with a little girl who wanted to see Snow White. I told the little girl and her family where Snow White would be in Germany and shared with them that I had recently made a wish in the well with Snow White. The look on their faces made my day and was a reminder of how important Disney is for people who wish to come here for worthwhile memories and moments.”

Nicholas’ perspective on food and beverage has changed majorly throughout the course of his program. A role that he may not have chosen has turned out to be a fantastic opportunity to learn more transferrable skills, make meaningful connections with his fellow Cast and Guests and give back to the company that started his love for communication.

One piece of advice Nicholas has for other Disney Programs participants who are starting their journey is to be intentional about your perspective.

“For someone starting the program who is nervous or unsure about what to expect, always keep in mind that you are helping create memories no matter the role you are in. You are telling a story in that role, and it helps to keep everything at Disney working and functional. With that mindset, it’ll prepare you and set you up for success,” shared Nicholas.

Every day spent working at Walt Disney World Resort is a dream come true for Nicholas. He is constantly reminded of the passion he holds from visiting this magical place and is thankful for the creativity and storytelling that was sparked in him at a young age.
