Working under experienced theatrical professionals and gaining practical experience in their field of study, Disney Theatrical Apprentices in the UK can work towards an apprenticeship qualification while being part of the magic.
Hannah is a Creative Venue Technician Apprentice based within Disney Theatrical Group’s West End productions in London, sharing her favorite memories, what she's learned and advice for future applicants:
What does a day in the life look like as a Theatrical Apprentice?
“As a Disney Theatrical Apprentice, your day-to-day responsibilities vary depending on what department you’re in. All departments come into work at different times to do either a rig check or preset to prepare for the show, which allows them to test everything used during a show to make sure it’s working correctly. During the show, I will either be learning or carrying out one of the backstage tracks.”
What's it like working backstage for Disney?
“It is the most fun I’ve ever had. To be able to work so closely with the incredible cast and crew members has been so rewarding and has taught me so much. It’s an incredible experience to know you are part of such well-known and loved productions!”
What Disney productions have you worked on, and what are you working on right now?
“I have been lucky enough to work on The Lion King, Hercules and The Greatest Showman.
I was part of both Hercules and The Greatest Showman from day one of rehearsals, which was the most exciting experience. I just finished my final placement with automation on Hercules, and I’m excited for what’s next!”
Throughout your time as a Theatrical Apprentice, how have you grown your skills within technical and backstage operations?
“I have built up so much knowledge across all backstage departments. I now have an understanding of how sound, lighting, wardrobe and puppets operate which is incredibly useful for my future endeavors. I have also specialized in stage management and automation, therefore gaining a more in-depth understanding of how these departments operate. Being able to troubleshoot and problem solve during live show environments is a skill I will take with me wherever I go!”
The Theatrical Apprenticeship program rotates through different operational teams to bring stage productions to life. What has been your favorite rotation so far?
“My favorite rotations have been with Stage Management, spending lots of time in with this department during the rehearsal, tech and open periods for both Hercules and The Greatest Showman. I really enjoy how collaborative Stage Management is. As a Stage Manager, you are a central point of contact for each department as well as the cast, which means you are very involved with everything that is going on, which I find very rewarding.”
Tell us about your favorite magical moment from your apprenticeship!
“It is incredibly exciting to see a show come together. I think for me, a super magical moment was the opening night of The Greatest Showman. To hear the opening number and the audience going wild was so rewarding after a very intense few months of rehearsals.”
How has this experience influenced where you want to take your career next?
“This experience has provided me with an excellent understanding of how each department works together to bring a creative vision to life. I’ve been able see what goes in to making a backstage department run smoothly and how much work goes into building, opening and running a show. It has hugely impacted my career growth by giving me a broader understanding of how to work efficiently in a backstage environment. I have learned many new skills and have met so many incredible people. Everything I have learned throughout my journey at Disney will play a vital role in my future - and I’m excited to see where I go next.”
What advice would you give to someone applying to a Theatrical Apprenticeship at Disney?
“Do it! You won’t lose anything from simply applying, but you could gain so much.
Think about the professional experience and learning opportunities you’ll build. To get the most out of the theatre industry, a very hands-on style of learning is required, and an apprenticeship is the best way to gauge whether the theatre lifestyle is for you!”
