Alex, an Entertainment Technical Resource Manager with Disney Cruise Line, has insight and advice for aspiring entertainment technicians interested in pursuing a career at sea with Disney.
What do you value most about working for Disney Cruise Line?
What I value most about working for Disney Cruise Line is the unique blend of storytelling, technology and teamwork that brings world-class entertainment to life at sea. The company’s commitment to excellence, innovation, inclusion and the guest experience is truly inspiring. I love being part of a team that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in live entertainment. It’s incredibly rewarding to work alongside talented cast members who are passionate about delivering magic worldwide every single day.
What advice do you have for newcomers in the entertainment technology industry?
For anyone starting in the entertainment industry, a career at sea can be an incredible launchpad. It provides hands-on experience with some of the most advanced technology in live entertainment while allowing you to develop skills in a fast-paced, high-standard environment. One of the biggest advantages is that your room and board are included, which allows you to focus on growing your career without the financial burdens of traditional living expenses. Plus, you get the unique opportunity to travel the world, experience different cultures, and build a global network of industry professionals. Whether you work at sea for a few years or make it a long-term career, the experience you gain – technically and personally – is invaluable.
What’s so great about working in the entertainment technology industry?
What makes the entertainment technology industry so great is the people. This field is filled with incredibly talented, driven and passionate individuals who bring creativity and innovation to every project. Their dedication to excellence, problem-solving mindset and collaborative spirit makes even the most challenging days exciting and rewarding. No matter where you go in the industry, you’ll find a strong sense of camaraderie – whether you’re working on a major production, freelancing or celebrating a successful install. It’s the people who make this industry not just a career, but a community.
What was your first role in the industry?
I started in the industry on the creative side, specifically as a director. I quickly found myself drawn to the technical, design and logistical aspects of production. As I transitioned into stage management and production management, I realized how much I loved the technical processes and systems that bring a production to life. The challenge of coordinating all the moving parts – technology, people and schedules – became something I thrived on. That shift led me to the cruise entertainment industry, where I’ve been able to combine my creative background with my passion for organization and problem-solving to help bring incredible productions and people to the stage.
What has been your favorite project to work on?
One of my favorite projects has been leading staffing for the Entertainment Technical team with Disney Cruise Line. Ensuring that our ships are staffed with the right technicians is incredibly rewarding because it directly impacts the day-to-day operations through our entertainment offerings onboard, and the magic we create for our guests daily. I love being able to support our crew members not just in their day-to-day roles, but also in their long-term career growth – whether it’s helping them find the right position, providing training opportunities or guiding them toward the next step in their journey. Working closely with our incredible crew members onboard is truly inspiring; their dedication and passion make everything we do possible, and I’m proud to play a role in helping them succeed.
What’s next for Disney Cruise Line?
Disney Cruise Line is in an incredible period of expansion, growing from a fleet of six ships to eight in 2025 – and by 2031, we’ll have a total of 13 ships sailing worldwide. At the end of 2025, we’re especially excited to welcome two new ships: the Disney Destiny, which will sail out of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and the Disney Adventure, our first ship dedicated to the Asian market, homeported out of Singapore. This growth allows us to bring even more immersive Disney experiences and innovative technology to guests around the world, creating new opportunities for talented technicians to join our team and be part of something truly magical.
