Among the many star seafarers onboard our fleet, those who have accomplished the feat of becoming Third Engineers are known for their technical skills and watchful eye – providing a smooth sailing experience for all on board. Third Engineer Daniel is one of the first Postgraduate Engineers with Disney Cruise Line and was offered a full-time role with our fleet after completing his initial contract, making magic at sea onboard the Disney Fantasy.

Always an inquisitive individual, Daniel grew up fascinated with cruise ships and was instantly hooked on sailing the seven seas. He recounts fondly, “The desire to work in the maritime industry comes from an interest in ships I took when I was a younger. I was always interested in the complex engineering and construction of cruise ships.” While studying at Massachusetts Maritime Academy and deciding the path he wanted to take professionally, it was a no-brainer. “Fast forward about 10 years and being able to couple that passion with a love for hands-on work has led me to join Disney and the cruise industry environment,” he said.

Upon graduating, Daniel had his sights set on a lifelong dream: working onboard Disney Cruise Line. “I chose to work here because I wanted to join the cruise industry, and I had heard many wonderful things about this company,” he explained. He started exploring roles with Disney Cruise Line and soon began a magical new journey as a Postgraduate Third Engineer. After completing his initial contract, Daniel’s impact to all crew and guests onboard was evident, and he was offered a full-time role as a Third Engineer onboard Disney Cruise Line’s fleet.

Now, as a newly-minted Third Engineer, Daniel’s responsibilities span ship-wide to ensure a seamless sailing experience. Responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of the ship's engine room machinery and auxiliary systems, Daniel makes sure everything runs efficiently and safely at sea.

Holding ample sailing experience under his belt, Daniel’s advice to those interested in roles onboard Disney Cruise Line is simple: “Be willing to step out of your comfort zone and know why you want to be in the cruise industry.” He continued, “You are working with people from many different backgrounds and from all corners of the globe. There is a wonderfully diverse portfolio of skills and outlooks that you have at your disposal to help you. Don’t be averse to the culture shock but rather embrace it to help you grow as a mariner.”

Throughout his maritime experience, the Disney difference remains. According to Daniel, “I really appreciate the positive attitude that Disney takes towards safety. My coworkers have really built an environment where I feel comfortable speaking up on safety protocols.” Though his role is more backstage, Daniel is just as eager as any crew member to keep the Disney magic alive.

His favorite part of the job? “My favorite part about working for Disney Cruise Line is the attitude of my coworkers, and the people I get to meet across our ship. I feel very well supported by my fellow teammates, and it is a wonderful environment to walk into every morning, regardless of how I may be feeling. I really feel comfortable learning and asking questions,” he said. Daniel is excited to continue in his journey with Disney Cruise Line, especially with the endless possibilities that lie ahead for our fleet with his trusted crew members by his side.
