1. Don’t forget about community!

Shadeed is a proud alum of Florida A&M University (FAMU). He utilized his educational community to create connections throughout his career. Shadeed encouraged attendees to reach out to those that have a common background as you to start conversations or foster relationships. He describes NABJ as a “family reunion” now!

2. Don’t underestimate yourself.

Being a graduate from a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), Shadeed shared this inspiring piece of knowledge: “Know that your education is as good as anyone else’s. Be humble and coachable, but be hungry at the same time. Know what you want to go for and pursue it. Stack as many skillsets along the way because, at a company like ESPN and Disney, there are many opportunities to move around and pursue various careers.”

3. Take advantage of the space you’re in!

With attendees of NABJ ranging from young professionals to veterans of their craft, there is a wealth of knowledge to be shared. “Don’t be afraid to approach people. Be confident in what you bring to the table while also being coachable,” said Shadeed. He shared that one of his favorite memories includes when students came up to him after operating the JIB camera for a First Take filming during the conference. The students were intrigued when he changed from his onset “uniform” to business casual at the ESPN booth. “They were shocked to see me switch from the suit to shorts,” he joked, but it served as a great ice breaker and he remembers those students to this day.

4. Follow up after the conference!

Don’t forget about those great connections you make during your time at NABJ. Be sure to connect with folks on LinkedIn or set up coffee chats to create long lasting relationships.

5. HAVE FUN!

Shadeed shared that NABJ is an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and form great relationships. Make sure to visit every booth and attend sessions you may not know a lot about as it could spark new interests, or you could make unexpected connections.
