AVENGERS CAMPUS AT DISNEY CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE® PARK

With more than 70 years of incredible stories and iconic Super Heroes to inspire us, deciding what type of environment to create was Imagineering’s first challenge. Early on, the project team narrowed in on the idea of creating a campus where a diverse array of characters and stories could unfold. The story quickly started to take shape — it would be a place where the Avengers and their allies could share their unique powers, technology and knowledge with campus “recruits.” And, this story was part of a connected universe — one that included the Stark Expo at Hong Kong Disneyland, and another campus at Disneyland Paris (coming soon!).

When developing Avengers Campus, Imagineers leveraged core philosophies as the key themes of the land — power, sharing, diversity and teamwork. And just like the Avengers assembling, Imagineers with a wide breadth of talent and expertise came together to create something inspiring using tools, technology and techniques that brought extraordinary characters and experiences to life, putting guests right in the middle of the action.

Innovative Gesture Tracking Technology

For the new attraction WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure, Imagineers implemented an innovative technology adapted specifically for this attraction. The WEB Slinger vehicles identify arm movement and map out the geometry of a web sling, rendering a 3D web in the interactive gameplay.

To enable the most accurate and flexible interaction, Imagineers leveraged infrared cameras on the WEB Slinger vehicles that allow guests to sling webs like Spider-Man and experience what it’s like to have super powers. The web-slinging is done in real time with interactive scenes in the attraction, and the attraction does not require wearable technology other than 3D glasses.

Authentic Details in Heroic Locations

Just like the creative campuses that our Imagineering teams work out of — or the campus of any college or tech company — Avengers Campus has a collection of different addresses, each hosted by a different Avenger or their ally.

Imagineers created original stories including the Worldwide Engineering Brigade — also known as WEB. It brings together bright innovators like Peter Parker who have been assembled by Tony Stark to invent new technologies and equip everyday people to become heroes. WEB is home to the new WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure, the first Disney ride-through attraction to feature this iconic Super Hero.

The team also created original stories in Pym Test Kitchen, a location that brings to life the world of Ant-Man and The Wasp, as well as an Ancient Sanctum, where Imagineers installed mystical artifacts. Other heroic locations include the Avengers Headquarters, with a shining Quinjet atop its roof.

Spider-Man Swings into Action

Just as technology evolves in film to bring Super Heroes to life in new ways on the big screen, Imagineers continue to push the envelope with cutting-edge technology to create unforgettable experiences, and guests visiting Avengers Campus will be awed by the sight of Spider-Man swinging up to 65 feet in the air above the Worldwide Engineering Brigade.

This remarkable feat is enabled by Stuntronics technology. Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development designed a sophisticated robot that uses onboard sensors to make its own real-time decisions when to tuck, somersault and slow down its spin. There is a lot of math and physics involved, and the team has a published paper and patent related to the technology.

More Heroic Encounters Than Ever Before

Throughout Avengers Campus, Super Heroes come to life in ways that are more exciting than ever, thanks to a strong collaboration between Disney Live Entertainment and Imagineering teams. New recruits at Avengers Campus may have heroic encounters with Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Ant-Man and The Wasp, Doctor Strange, Star-Lord and Gamora, Black Panther, Thor, Black Widow, Loki and Taskmaster, some of whom are making their first appearances at Disney California Adventure Park.

Recruits can also train with Black Panther’s loyal bodyguards, the Dora Milaje, to learn wisdom from Wakanda and what it’s like to be a member of this elite royal guard. Okoye, the leader of the Dora Milaje, also debuts for the first time in a Disney park as she leads this training encounter.

Specially Designed Merchandise and Food & Beverage

One of the hallmarks of Imagineering is immersive storytelling. Imagineers collaborated closely with Disney food & beverage and merchandise partners to ensure every detail supports the storytelling of Avengers Campus. This resulted in normal foods at unusual scales and harnessing the powers of favorite Super Heroes through merchandise.

As examples, regular-sized pretzels transform after going through a quantum tunnel — they come out big or small — and Pingo Doce, the distinctly green beverage from Avengers lore, will be a treat for fans new and old.

Avengers Campus debuted June 4, 2021, at Disney California Adventure Park and will open in Walt Disney Studios Park at Disneyland Paris at a future date.
