Keeping the magic of the Walt Disney World Resort running is a 24-hour, 365-day operation — especially for the Facilities and Operations Services (FOS) team. These cast members contribute to the parks, resorts and other locations in ways guests may never see but always experience.
Military veterans can translate their technical expertise and leadership experience into meaningful, long-term careers at Disney — as three cast members, Bob, Sam and Manny did.
Why Veterans Choose Disney
Bob has been with Disney for 25 years and first heard about the career opportunities available from a friend in the military. He worked at Disneyland Resort for 15 years before transferring to Walt Disney World in 2016, where he serves as an Inspection Program Manager at Central Shops — a 300,000 square foot workshop where cast members build, repair and restore Walt Disney World magic.
“The atmosphere here at Central Shops is friendly with a family feel to it,” Bob said. “Cast members say hi and help each other. We are the 'can-do' team, getting things done.”
Sam, a Senior Manager in Engineering Services at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, found his start with the company in a similar way.
“After serving in the military, I was inspired to pursue a role at Disney because I’ve always been driven by the idea of serving something greater than myself,” Sam said. “Disney is a highly respected organization and a leader in its industry, and I truly believe in the product we provide — creating happiness for people around the world.”
Senior Manager of Transportation Engineering Services Manny served 15 years in the United States Army Ordnance Corps, specializing in vehicle maintenance and took a family friend’s advice to meet with a Disney recruiter. That spontaneous decision led to a 27-year-long career at Walt Disney World.
Transferrable Skills at Disney
While each veteran took a different path to Disney, their military backgrounds provided a common foundation for success in highly technical roles.
Bob said a combination of technical expertise, attention to detail, problem solving and strong communication skills is critical for FOS roles. An FOS cast member should combine technical expertise with strong work habits and be certified in multiple inspection methods.
In Sam’s case, he developed many of those skills while serving in the military.
“My military background helped shape my leadership style and technical approach, while Disney has provided me with the opportunity to strengthen and expand those capabilities,” Sam said. “Through that continued growth, I have been able to successfully adapt my experience to the corporate environment and become a more effective and well-rounded leader.”
To veterans considering a role with Disney, Sam assured that service experience can translate well into a successful career at Disney and the corporate world. He recommended focusing on how to communicate that experience during the interview process.
Manny emphasized the opportunities for career longevity as a veteran at Disney.
“Beginning as a technician and progressing to Senior Manager of the department, my journey demonstrates the potential to build a long and rewarding career,” Manny said.

Making a Difference for Our Guests
FOS roles directly impact the Walt Disney World guest experience by ensuring the park’s facility infrastructure and show elements are maintained to the highest standard. While much of the work happens behind the scenes, it is essential in creating the seamless, immersive and reliable environment guests expect when they visit, according to Sam.
“This work allows guests to remain fully immersed in the stories we bring to life, without distraction, and to enjoy an experience that feels effortless, magical and memorable,” Sam said.
Manny added that every new FOS project brings fresh goals to set and meet.
“It is incredibly satisfying to see a plan come to life from beginning to end,” Manny said. “Watching the work come together and knowing it has helped improve our fleet in reliability and safety while achieving key objectives makes the effort especially rewarding.”
