How Riddhi leveraged connections through AAJA to land an internship with ABC News
Meet Riddhi, a journalism student and member of the Asian American Journalism Association (AAJA). She recently started a production internship at World News Tonight in New York City. Disney Internships can be competitive, but thanks to her passion for journalism, career ambition and connections through AAJA, she stood out and landed the job. Below, she shares her experience networking through AAJA and offers advice to other students aspiring to intern at ABC.
Name: Riddhi
School: The University of Texas at Austin
Internship Role: World News Tonight Production Intern
1. Tell us about yourself! What are you studying in school and what made you interested in an internship at ABC?
Hi! I’m Riddhi, a rising senior majoring in journalism. My interest in interning for ABC stemmed from my admiration for the commitment to accurate, truthful reporting this newsroom has produced for close to a century.
2. How did you get connected with AAJA?
I joined UT’s AAJA chapter my freshman year and attended the national convention the summer before my sophomore year began.
3. Tell us about your experience with AAJA. How did your experience with the organization help you land your internship?
AAJA has been an incredible resource for me. Not only did I learn about this internship opportunity through AAJA, but AAJA granted me a scholarship for housing which made saying yes to this opportunity possible. I also have access to a strong network of AAJA members who also work at ABC, and I plan on connecting with them over the course of the summer.
4. What advice do you have for other students who are interested in an internship at ABC?
I always recommend creating opportunities for yourself. For my first internship, I reached out to the CEO of the company and asked if I could intern for them. That internship helped me land the next internship and so on, which built up my resume so that I proved to be a strong candidate for ABC. Once you get to the interview round, I recommend making sure your genuine passion for journalism comes across in your answers and being able to articulate what you think makes ABC stand out from other newsrooms.
