From Merchandise to Guest Relations – Raven’s Story

Raven came to Disney with a deep appreciation for the magic and meaningful moments that make this place so special. As a practicing photographer in her free time, Raven is often catching emotions and memories from behind the lens – but she wished to experience these emotions and magical moments in a completely new way.

Raven began her Disney College Program in Fantasyland Merchandise and knew from the beginning that she wanted to extend into Guest Relations. “I saw the program as an opportunity to grow personally and professionally, step outside my comfort zone and surround myself with people who are passionate about making guests feel seen, valued and cared for,” said Raven.

She immediately began working towards this goal, working hard to excel and learn as much as possible in her Fantasyland Merchandise role. “I learned how to anticipate guest needs, maintain a positive attitude during long lines and turn brief interactions into meaningful moments,” she explained.

The skills she learned during her time in Merchandise have already come in handy as she learns her new role. “This role also strengthened my confidence in problem-solving, communication and adaptability that directly prepared me for Guest Relations.”

Raven worked extremely hard preparing for this extension opportunity – partaking in long shifts, networking, attending learning offerings and pursuing professional development opportunities.

“There were days when I was tired, but I still chose to attend sessions and introduce myself to leaders because I knew those steps were important for my growth,” she said.

Although balancing everything was a challenge, Raven believes it truly made the difference.

“Stepping outside of my comfort zone was my biggest challenge, but it ultimately became my greatest strength,” she said.

Raven has now been in her role with Guest Relations at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for two months, and she shared that it has already been incredibly rewarding.

“Each day brings new opportunities to assist guests, celebrate special moments and turn challenges into positive experiences. I enjoy being a calm and welcoming presence, and helping guests continue their day feeling supported and cared for,” she shared.

If Raven were to give one piece of advice to current Disney Programs participants hoping to extend into a different role, it would be to be an advocate for yourself and be intentional with your network and connections.

“Build genuine relationships with leaders, ask questions and clearly communicate your goals. Focus on mastering your current role, because your work ethic and attitude will speak for you. Most importantly, stay authentic. Your passion is your greatest strength.”

Raven will have an incredibly positive impact on so many Guests’ experiences – and we are so happy for her here at Disney Programs!
