Guidelines for the Use of Scissor Lifts & Aerial Boom Lifts

Aerial lifts, including boom lifts and scissor lifts, are very common in the production environment, but it should be noted that there are unique hazards and risks associated with this equipment.  Workers who operate these lifts, as well as those attaching rigging to them or installing cribbing under them, must be qualified and trained to do so.

In the Los Angeles area, training is provided by the CSATF Safety Pass program.  All employees must complete this training prior to operating aerial lifts.

Outside of Los Angeles, training can be provided by a vendor who supplies the equipment to the production, a representative from the equipment manufacturer, a labor union which is well versed in the machinery, or any other qualified instructor.  Contact Production Safety for guidance if needed.

For industry standards relating to aerial lifts, you can refer to AMPTP Safety Bulletin #22, “Guidelines for the Use of Scissor Lifts (Elevating Work Platforms) and Aerial Boom Lifts (Extensible Boom Platforms).”
