While I was in college, I had a number of friends that completed the Disney College Program. A program where currently enrolled or recently graduated college students are given the opportunity to work in one of Disney’s parks or resorts. After hearing about their Disney College Program experiences, I knew that I wanted to take part in this amazing opportunity. Following graduation, I found myself working at The Seas with Nemo and Friends in Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort. While on my program, I fell in love with life at Disney and ended up staying for a full year.
As my time on the Disney College Program came to an end, I knew that I wasn’t done with The Walt Disney Company. While in college, I earned a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate and I had seen information about Disney English on Disney’s internal career network. For me, Disney English was the perfect next step in my career. Just days after attending a Disney English information session, I applied, was scheduled for an interview and was offered a job.
A few months later, I found myself on a flight to Beijing, China.
Since I’ve arrived in Beijing, I have had the wonderful opportunity to make amazing friends, attend valuable training sessions as part of my job with Disney English, learn all about life and culture in China and travel to nine new countries.
As part of my job as a Foreign Trainer, I work closely with the cast members in my learning center to ensure all of our guests are satisfied and that business is booming. Disney English offers more than just in-classroom experiences, though. My learning center keeps us active in team-building activities that can be anything from a paintball course to rowing kayaks in rivers that cut through mountain ranges! We also have amazing region-wide events that bring together the learning centers in our area for even more team-building activities, from trivia nights and Halloween costume parties to our annual New Year’s Gala.
Outside of Disney English, Beijing has an immeasurable amount of culture just waiting to be explored. On most weekends I can be found at a café in Sanlitun, in a local park taking in the seasonal foliage, binging a program on Netflix, or using my free movie tickets (another job perk!) to see the newest Disney film. But on your not-so-average weekends, I am camping on the Great Wall of China, walking around the Summer Palace, bargaining for goods at the Silk Market or in the basements of Xidan’s shopping centers, or biking through the hutongs (alleyways). No matter your mood, there is always something new to find or do here in Bejing.
Life in China is fantastic and unpredictable. The day you think you’ve learned or seen everything, is the day you learn something new. The same goes for Disney English. It is a constant learning experience and everyone you meet along the way is there to help you survive your day-to-day and to assist in your growth as you move along.
Two years later, I am still here and I am loving the endless learning experience that is life in China with Disney English!
